The Tony (Scarcello) Awards! My personal awards ballot for 2016.

Every year during awards season, I am frequently asked who I thought did the best work in movies for the year. Seeing as how I love answering that question, I thought I'd compose a blog on it.

To be clear, these are not my Oscar predictions. This is just my personal ballot for who I thought did the best work in movies for 2016! As always I am a fan of movies first and a reviewer second, so whatever gets my inner fandom going most will definitely get the most attention from me.

Also, I did not see all the movies worth watching in 2016. I haven't seen Nocturnal Animals, Sully, or 20th Century Women which I'm told are all solid, award worthy movies. Also, the James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro, which got an Oscar nom, hasn't been released in my city yet, and I'm certain I'll be obsessing over that when I do watch it.

Now that the disclaimers have been disclaimed and the introduction has been introduced, here is my ballot for movies released in 2016!

 So here we go!

With lyrics written by grown men that capture the wild angst of young love, this melancholy ballad also has one of the best melodies I've heard this year. I tear up every time I hear it.

Scorsese spent more than twenty years crafting this script based on one of the most challenging novel I've ever read. The way the movie captures the tension that exists between doubt and faith is nothing short of spectacular.

Manchester by the Sea

I've written a lot about this movie, and with good reason. Kenneth Longergan has not only crafted a wonderfully compelling and believable narrative, but he also writes such natural, authentic dialogue. Hard to ignore the genius behind this one.

Mahershala Ali. Moonlight

Completely void of flash and showmanship, Mahershala Ali brings one of the most tender performances of the year. Through his body language and facial expressions, he never lets you forget he is playing a Miami drug dealer, but he still manages to make this one of the most heartwarming characters of the year.

This is my favorite performance of the year. Viola Davis carries this character through the tragedy she endures and the transformation she experiences with her nearly unmatched talent. She's got a monologue in here that will keep you holding your breath until the scene is over.

It was almost impossible for me to choose between Casey and Denzel. Denzel has been responsible for some of the best performances of the last 30 years, from Glory to Malcolm X to Flight, he has created his own brand of acting. Meshing impeccably appropriate theatricality with just enough realism, Denzel has given us his best work since Malcolm X, and easily one of my favorite performances of the year.

What do you get when you give the best director of all time more than 20 years to prepare for his dream project? Possibly his finest direction. The vision is clear, and the execution is excellent. Everything is done with purpose and passion. You feel a sense of Martin Scorsese' own battle with faith layered throughout the DNA of this movie.

I've already written extensively about why this is not only my favorite movie of the year, but probably one of my favorite movies of all time. Patience perfects in this, as giving Martin Scorsese 25 years to direct this has allowed us to receive one of the best movies ever made, and my easiest number 1 choice of the year since 2011 gave us my favorite movie, Tree of Life.
